Glastonbury Goddess Conference 2019

 DECLARATION OF POSITION

  • I am writing from the perspective of a white British, cisgender, queer woman who is also an emic researcher within various contemporary Pagan communities in the UK.
  • As a scholar with a background in Egyptology, it is important to me to contribute to accurate knowledge regarding the ancient world. I have an invested interest within academia that my own and related fields maintain their scientific integrity, and that research filters accurately to the general public.
  • As an emic researcher I am conscious that my insider position has the potential to compromise objectivity, and thus I will endeavour to demonstrate reflexivity and multivocality in order to represent various voices.
  • My intention, as one possessing affiliations with  both sides, is to advocate a mutually beneficial relationship. Therefore, I intend to record perspectives from both sides, highlighting positive, ambiguous, and problematic areas.

ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS & MITIGATIONS

  • Declaration of position - As above, my aims and position will be shared with each informant that I formally interact with.
  • Informant self-identification - At the prefix of every interview and survey I will offer the opportunity for self-identification in terms of the labelling of religio-spiritual path. Following this, I will also present my choice to term, questioning how suitable this term is. If it proves to be wholly unsuitable I am flexible in adapting to a majority-preferred term.
  • Participant review - I will offer informants the opportunity to review my interpretations of their responses to correct or re-phrase in order to best represent their voice. The exception to this is anonymous questionnaire responses.
  • Informant consent - Consent to use data collected from interviews or through participation in certain insider activities, shall be obtained by informants or organisers. This consent can be retracted according to a reasonable time-frame. This also applies to any recordings, photographs or videos used.
  • Use of online data - I will only be using data from online sources that are publicly accessible, and do not need to one 'follow', 'friend', or 'join' groups or profiles in order to view contents. Wherever possible, consent will be requested an obtained from the original poster of online content, though this will not always be possible.
Do you have any other suggestions for me to consider? Please let me know below!
